  • John Loor Elected as NPUC Executive Secretary

Announced by Archie Harris on Aug 26, 2010

RIDGEFIELD, WASH. (August 26, 2010) – John R. Loor was elected as the new North Pacific Union Conference executive secretary by the NPUC executive committee during its meeting August 25, in Ridgefield, Wash. Loor, who has served as Montana Conference president since 2000, has accepted and will succeed Bryce Pascoe who retired on August 1. He expects to assume these new responsibilities in October.

Loor brings a variety of experience to his new role at the union conference. Along with a Master of Divinity degree, he holds an additional degree in business administration with an emphasis in management.

Following his 1968 graduation from La Sierra Academy in Southern California, Loor fulfilled undergraduate work at Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, Tenn, with a religion major. After his post-graduate work at Andrews University, Loor served as a pastor in California, Kentucky and Colorado.

In 1986, he accepted the role of associate director of church ministries and youth for the Central California Conference. He moved to the Southern New England Conference in 1994 as director of youth, Sabbath School and community services.

In January 1998, Loor joined the Upper Columbia Conference based in Spokane, Wash., where he worked with then UCC president, Max Torkelsen, as assistant to the president and communication director. He moved to his most current role as Montana Conference president in January 2000.

Loor was married to the former Susan Elaine Spears in June 1972. They have two children: Cindy, who is married and living in Loma Linda, Calif., and Rob, currently a student at Walla Walla University. Susan expects to continue her teaching role at Mt. Ellis Adventist Elementary School in Bozeman, Mont., through the current school year before moving to join her husband.

"John is a spiritual leader of unquestioned loyalty to God's Word and the mission of our church," says Max Torkelsen, NPUC president. "He has wide experience and is well known throughout the Northwest. He'll be a valuable addition to our leadership team as we continue to develop goals and objectives to guide the church in preparing for the soon return of Jesus."

Loor is excited to begin this new role. “I’m truly honored," he says. "I feel God has led Susan and me in this decision, and I’m humbled to be used by Him to forward His work here in the North Pacific Union. I look forward to working with the union’s leadership, with the leadership of our local conferences and with the members of this great union.”

He definitely has mixed emotions about leaving Montana. “Whenever you move to a new assignment, it always means that you will be leaving friends," he says. "Susan and I have had ten wonderful years serving the folk in the Montana Conference. The neat thing about accepting this call is that we don’t have to say goodbye to them. After all, Montana is part of the North Pacific Union so I’ll have the opportunity to continue to serve them.”
